Gossard attended Seattle’s Northwest Boarding School and played in his first band, March of Crimes, with future Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd and novelist Jonathan Evison. He later joined The Ducky Boys, led by future Mudhoney guitarist Steve Turner.

After playing in several local bands, Stone Gossard joined Green River with vocalist Mark Arm, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Alex Vincent. The band released the EPs “Come On Down” (1985) and “Dry As a Bone” (1987) and the album “Rehab Doll” (1988).
Gossard then formed Mother Love Bone with Ament, Bruce Fairweather, Andrew Wood, and Greg Gilmore. The band released the EP “Shine” (1989) and the album “Apple” (1990) before Wood died of a heroin overdose in March 1990, causing the band to disband.
Stone reunited with his childhood friend Mike McCready and the two were trying to start a band with Jeff Ament when they were asked to join Chris Cornell’s new band Temple of the Dog, which was a tribute to Wood.
